Deuteronomy: A work in Progress?

I was wondering today if this book was compiled from different problems Moses encountered or if Moses went up on the mountain and came back with the law. It seems like there were problems encountered first and it was a work in progress because the laws start out with "If a man..." or something similar. Of course this theory could be totally wrong. What do you think?

  1. I believe this book was written as different addresses by Moses to the Jewish people before they enter into the promised Land. He wanted to be sure they remembered to stay faithful.

He says in 29:12-13 - "You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised."

  2. When you say different addresses do you mean that the law was written in response to everyday problems or that the Holy Spirit gave Moses all the law at once and he recorded it?

  3. Dueteronomy is 5 or so different sermons. It is the last bit of time that Moses has before Israel enters the Promised Land. So he spent what time he had left retelling the the Israel community to remember...so all the laws that Moses references are from Exodus to Numbers...
